India-Russia Ties Described As “Steadiest Big Relationship”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India’s ties with Russia remain one of the most stable and durable major relationships in the world. Speaking at the HT Leadership Summit, he noted that despite geopolitical changes and external pressures, the India-Russia partnership has remained steady over decades. He described the relationship as “deeply rooted” and resistant to short-term fluctuations.

Strategic Autonomy At The Core

Jaishankar stressed that India’s foreign policy is guided by strategic autonomy. He said no country has the right to expect a veto over India’s diplomatic choices. According to him, partnerships are based on India’s national interest, not on alignment or bloc politics. He highlighted that India has strong relations with Russia, while also maintaining close cooperation with countries such as the United States, France, and Japan.

Economic Relations Need To Expand

While defence and energy cooperation between India and Russia have traditionally been strong, Jaishankar acknowledged that economic ties are “below potential”. He pointed out that both countries are now working on improving trade volumes, investment flows, and mobility agreements. The recent visit of President Vladimir Putin, he said, focused on expanding non-defence areas of cooperation, including manufacturing and technology partnership.

Partnership Will Continue Despite Global Pressures

Jaishankar noted that international volatility has made global diplomacy more complex. However, he said India will continue to engage with Russia while also strengthening ties with other partners. He added that Russia remains an important partner in energy, space, nuclear cooperation, and defence, and the relationship will continue to evolve as economic opportunities expand.
