India-Russia Finalising New Deals Ahead of Putin Visit

India and Russia are preparing to finalise several bilateral agreements, initiatives and projects as they gear up for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi in early December 2025. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow focused on adding “more substance and texture” to the countries’ special and privileged strategic partnership.

Strategic Priorities

The scope of the agreements spans defence, energy, trade and technology cooperation. India and Russia are emphasising long-term projects rather than one-off deals, aligning with their shared aim to boost deep-rooted ties. Both sides emphasised that the planned visit is an opportunity to signal continuity in their relationship despite evolving global geopolitics.

Visit and Broader Implications

Putin’s scheduled visit to India follows extensive preparatory talks and reflects the longstanding partnership between the two countries. The visit is expected to reaffirm India’s strategic autonomy and Russia’s role as a key partner amid shifts in global alliances. Observers say the agreements being finalised ahead of the visit could strengthen defence and energy ties and signal stability in bilateral relations.
