India Rises To 3rd Spot In Asia Power Index 2025

India has secured the third position in the Lowy Institute’s Asia Power Index 2025, ranking behind only the United States and China. With a comprehensive score of 40 out of 100, India has, for the first time, crossed the threshold to be officially classified as a “major power” in the index.

Economic And Military Strength Drive Ranking

The report credits India’s rise to improvements in economic capability and military preparedness. Increased foreign investment flows, stronger economic partnerships and enhanced defence readiness contributed significantly to India’s higher ranking. These gains allowed India to surpass Japan in certain indicators of regional capability.

Influence Gap Still Remains

Despite its improved standing, the index notes that India’s regional influence is still not fully aligned with its economic and military potential. In areas like defence networks and diplomatic reach, India trails other major players, signalling the need for further strategic consolidation.

Impact On Asia’s Strategic Balance

India’s climb to the top tier strengthens its role in shaping Asian geopolitics. Analysts believe the new ranking reflects India’s expanding weight in security, trade and regional diplomacy, even as broader influence-building remains a long-term task.
