India Retaliates After LoC Firing Post Pahalgam Attack
In the wake of the deadly terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated. Late Thursday night, Pakistani troops initiated unprovoked firing along the Line of Control, prompting swift and strong retaliation from Indian forces. Military officials confirmed that India responded “effectively” and that no casualties were reported on the Indian side.
“There were incidents of small arms firing at some places along the LoC initiated by Pakistan last night. The firing was effectively responded to,” sources said.
This provocative act came just days after a heinous terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead, including a Nepali national. As evidence mounts of cross-border links to the assault, India has taken a series of stern measures targeting Pakistan diplomatically, militarily, and economically.
India Suspends Indus Waters Treaty
Among the most significant moves is India’s decision to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. On Thursday, India formally notified Pakistan that the treaty stands suspended with immediate effect. The Union Ministry of Water Resources dispatched an official letter conveying this decision, citing Pakistan’s role in sponsoring terrorism as the primary reason.
“The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.”
The communication further stated that the core assumptions behind the water-sharing agreement no longer hold due to demographic shifts and the growing necessity for clean energy infrastructure in India.
Diplomatic Fallout Deepens
Following India’s firm response, Pakistan has retaliated with threats of its own. It has hinted at the possibility of terminating all bilateral agreements with India, including the 1972 Simla Agreement, which serves as the legal basis for the current Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
International Attention on Rising Tensions
With diplomatic ties worsening and military preparedness on high alert, this phase of Indo-Pak relations is rapidly deteriorating. The global community remains watchful, though calls for de-escalation have so far had little visible impact on ground realities. Meanwhile, Indian officials continue to emphasize their resolve to respond decisively to any further aggression from across the border.
