India Reaches 400,000 Solar Installations Milestone Under PM’s Solar Scheme

India has achieved a significant milestone in its rooftop solar energy initiative, with the installation of over 400,000 solar units under the Prime Minister’s Kisan Surya Ghar Yojana. This ambitious scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January and approved by the government in February, aims to provide free electricity to 10 million households across the country by encouraging rooftop solar installations.

400,000 Solar Units Installed under Kisan Surya Ghar Yojana

Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced the achievement during an event organized by the International Solar Alliance (ISA) in New Delhi. He emphasized India’s rapid growth in solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, noting that the country has added over 17 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy between January and September of this year. This progress positions solar power as a crucial component of India’s energy mix.

Joshi highlighted the importance of the Kisan Surya Ghar Yojana, stating, “India has achieved four lakh installations under the PM’s Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.” Solar power now constitutes 20% of India’s total installed power capacity, marking a 26% growth rate compared to the previous year.

India’s Role in the International Solar Alliance

As president of the ISA, Joshi called on member nations to collaborate in promoting solar energy as the primary power source, fostering solar entrepreneurship, and mobilizing investments to accelerate the transition to clean energy. The ISA, formed in 2015 through the joint leadership of India and France, is a critical player in the global push for renewable energy. Its goal is to help member countries develop low-carbon strategies and attract $1 trillion in solar energy investments by 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement’s climate goals.

This milestone marks a crucial step forward for India as it continues to scale up solar energy adoption, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy goals and global climate commitments.
