India Protests Sri Lankan Navy’s Firing on Fishermen

The Indian government has lodged a strong protest following an incident where the Sri Lankan Navy fired upon and apprehended 13 Indian fishermen near Delft Island. Two fishermen sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, while three others suffered minor injuries. Indian consular officials in Jaffna have visited the injured to provide assistance.

In response, the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs to express India’s concerns. The Indian High Commission in Colombo has also raised the issue with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Indian government emphasized the importance of handling fishermen-related issues humanely, considering their livelihood challenges. It reiterated that the use of force is unacceptable and urged strict adherence to existing bilateral agreements between the two nations.
