India Proposes Stricter Action Against Repeat Traffic Violators
The Union government has proposed stricter traffic enforcement measures under revised motor vehicle rules, under which drivers committing repeated violations within a year could face temporary suspension of their driving licences. The proposal is part of a point-based penalty system aimed at curbing habitual traffic offences.
What Is Being Proposed
Under the proposed framework, drivers who accumulate multiple serious traffic violations such as overspeeding, signal jumping, dangerous driving or drunk driving within a 12-month period may face licence suspension of up to three months. The threshold being discussed is five or more violations in a year, though final enforcement will depend on notification and state-level implementation.
Why It Matters
India continues to record high numbers of road accidents, many linked to repeat offenders. Authorities believe a cumulative penalty system will act as a stronger deterrent than fines alone and encourage better driving behaviour.
What Comes Next
The revised rules are expected to be implemented through digital enforcement systems such as e-challans and centralised violation records. Motorists have been advised to strictly follow traffic rules as repeated offences could now attract harsher consequences.
