India Prepares for Xi, Putin Visits
India is preparing to host Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi for the BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12 and 13. Putin’s participation has been confirmed, while Xi is expected to attend, although Beijing has not formally announced his visit.
India Prepares for BRICS Summit 2026
Government agencies are coordinating security, protocol and diplomatic arrangements for the summit, which will bring together leaders from the expanded BRICS grouping.
India assumed the BRICS presidency for 2026 and is expected to focus discussions on reforming global institutions, strengthening economic cooperation, promoting Global South priorities and improving coordination among member countries.
The grouping now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
Xi Jinping India Visit Expected
Xi’s participation would mark his first visit to India since the informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mamallapuram in October 2019.
Modi invited Xi to the BRICS Summit during their meeting in China in August 2025. The proposed visit comes as India and China attempt to stabilise relations following prolonged tensions along the Line of Actual Control.
A Modi-Xi bilateral meeting could focus on border management, trade, direct connectivity and the gradual restoration of diplomatic exchanges.
Putin Confirms New Delhi Visit
Russia has confirmed that Putin will attend the September summit. A bilateral meeting between Putin and Xi is also expected on the sidelines.
Modi and Putin are likely to discuss defence cooperation, energy trade, civil nuclear projects and the conflict in Ukraine.
The presence of Xi and Putin would give the summit considerable geopolitical significance as India seeks to balance its strategic partnerships while advancing BRICS cooperation.
