India Positioned to Engage with Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and Iran: EAM Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized India’s distinctive diplomatic position, which allows it to maintain open channels of communication with countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and Iran. Speaking at a recent event, Jaishankar highlighted India’s independent foreign policy and its commitment to engaging with diverse nations, irrespective of their mutual relations.
Jaishankar stated, “India is one of the few countries that is in a position to talk to Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Iran.” This assertion underscores India’s strategic autonomy and its ability to navigate complex international relationships.
India’s approach, often referred to as “de-hyphenation,” involves engaging with countries based on bilateral merits without being influenced by their relations with other nations. This policy enables India to foster relationships with countries that may have adversarial ties with each other, thereby expanding its diplomatic reach and influence.
In the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, India has maintained a neutral stance, advocating for dialogue and peaceful resolution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Kyiv in August 2024 exemplified India’s commitment to engaging with both Russia and Ukraine, aiming to balance its relations and promote peace.
Similarly, India’s relations with Israel and Iran have been managed independently, allowing for cooperation in various sectors while maintaining a neutral stance in regional conflicts. This balanced approach has enabled India to act as a mediator and maintain strategic partnerships across different geopolitical spectrums.
