India, Philippines Seal Strategic Partnership

Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr arrived in New Delhi on August 4, 2025, for a five-day state visit. The trip marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines. He was formally welcomed at Rashtrapati Bhavan and later held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Strategic Partnership Officially Launched

On August 5, the two leaders held high-level discussions at Hyderabad House and officially elevated the bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership. The move signals stronger cooperation in defence, maritime security, trade, and regional development.

Defence Cooperation Takes Center Stage

One of the key highlights of the visit is the growing defence partnership. The Philippines has already received two batches of BrahMos supersonic missiles from India under a $375 million deal. Talks are underway for a follow-up agreement to expand this missile cooperation.

Both sides also reviewed recent joint naval drills held in the South China Sea, reflecting a shared interest in safeguarding maritime routes and promoting regional stability.

Trade and Economic Ties Expand

Bilateral trade has surpassed $3 billion, and both governments are working to boost investment in areas like digital infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and agriculture. Agreements were also discussed on disaster management and climate resilience projects.

Shared Indo-Pacific Vision

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. President Marcos Jr noted that the term “Indo-Pacific” better captures current geopolitical dynamics and emphasized the need for cooperation among like-minded democracies to uphold international law.
