India, Netherlands Strengthen Defence Ties in Delhi

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, David Van Weel, in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss expanding defence cooperation and deepen strategic partnership between the two countries. The talks focused on security issues, co-development of defence equipment and enhancing military-to-military links.

Discussion on Defence and Security Cooperation

During the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to boosting defence ties, with an emphasis on cooperation in co-production and co-development of defence platforms and technology. They highlighted the importance of collaboration between the defence industries of both nations, especially in niche and advanced technologies, as part of broader efforts to strengthen military readiness and industrial cooperation.

Shared Indo-Pacific Vision

Rajnath Singh and Van Weel also discussed the shared commitment of India and the Netherlands to a free, open, inclusive and rule-based Indo-Pacific region, underlining the strategic significance of such cooperation in the context of regional security dynamics. Both sides described the defence partnership as a key pillar of their Strategic Partnership, with plans to explore further avenues for collaboration that benefit both countries.

Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation

In the presence of both ministers, a Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation was exchanged between India’s Defence Secretary and the Netherlands’ Ambassador to India. The agreement sets the stage for developing a Defence Industrial Roadmap to guide future technology collaboration, co-development and industrial partnerships.

Broader Bilateral Engagement

The Dutch foreign minister’s visit to India also includes engagements aimed at enhancing ties beyond defence, reinforcing diplomatic, economic and cultural connections between the two countries. Officials highlighted strong people-to-people links, supported by a significant Indian diaspora in the Netherlands.
