India Nears BrahMos Missile Deals with Vietnam, Indonesia

India is moving closer to finalising export agreements for its BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with Vietnam and Indonesia, in deals estimated to be worth around $450 million. The proposed agreements are part of India’s expanding defence export push and reflect growing interest in Indian military platforms in Southeast Asia.

Officials familiar with the process said discussions with both countries are at an advanced stage, with procedural and technical aspects nearing completion. Once finalised, the deals would mark another milestone for India’s defence industry following earlier exports of the BrahMos system to the Philippines.

Strategic and Defence Context

The BrahMos missile is jointly developed by India and Russia and is regarded as one of the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles. It is capable of precision strikes against land and maritime targets and is widely seen as a strong deterrence platform. Exports of the missile system require clearances from all partner countries involved in its development, and those approvals are understood to be in place.

Vietnam and Indonesia are seeking to enhance their maritime and coastal defence capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges, particularly in contested waters. Defence analysts say the BrahMos system fits well into the operational requirements of both countries.

India’s Growing Defence Export Profile

India’s defence exports have increased steadily in recent years as the government pushes for greater self-reliance and global outreach under its defence manufacturing initiatives. The potential BrahMos deals underline India’s emergence as a credible supplier of advanced missile systems in the Indo-Pacific region.

What Lies Ahead

Formal signing of the agreements is expected after final approvals and contractual processes are completed. If concluded, the deals would further strengthen India’s strategic ties with Southeast Asian partners and reinforce its position in the global defence export market.
