India Names 15-Member Squad for Asia Cup 2025

The BCCI has announced India’s 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which will be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain, while opener Shubman Gill has been appointed vice-captain, marking his return to the T20 side after a strong showing in the Test series against England.

Key Selections and Exclusions

Selectors opted for a mix of seasoned players and fresh faces. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Kuldeep Yadav retained their spots as core members. Meanwhile, youngsters like Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, and Harshit Rana were picked to provide depth and flexibility. The decision to drop senior batsman Shreyas Iyer and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal drew attention, given their recent performances. Wicketkeeping duties will be shared between Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma.

Selection Committee’s Rationale

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that the selection focused on form, balance, and adaptability across conditions. He noted that the Asia Cup would serve as both a critical tournament and a platform for finalizing India’s combinations ahead of the T20 World Cup next year. Team management also emphasized the need for versatile all-rounders and finishers in the shorter format.
