India Monitors China’s Naval Activities in Indian Ocean
India’s Navy Chief, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, has highlighted the nation’s vigilant monitoring of China’s expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). He emphasized that the Indian Navy is fully aware of the movements and activities of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) within these strategic waters.
China’s Naval Expansion in the Indian Ocean
Over recent decades, China has notably increased its presence in the IOR. The PLAN, now the world’s largest navy by number of vessels, consistently maintains six to eight advanced combat ships in the region, even though piracy—a primary justification for their presence—has significantly declined. This sustained deployment underscores China’s strategic interest in the Indian Ocean, a vital conduit for global trade and energy shipments.
India’s Vigilant Maritime Surveillance
In response to China’s activities, the Indian Navy has enhanced its maritime domain awareness. Utilizing both manned and unmanned technologies, alongside space-based monitoring systems, India ensures comprehensive surveillance of the region. Collaborations with international agencies further bolster this intelligence network, enabling the Navy to track and analyze movements within the IOR effectively. Admiral Tripathi noted that this extensive awareness is “more than half the battle won” in safeguarding national interests.
Beyond Anti-Piracy: Research and Surveillance Vessels
While China’s initial justification for its naval presence was anti-piracy operations, the deployment of various research and satellite-tracking vessels suggests broader strategic objectives. These specialized ships, including deep-sea fishing vessels, have raised concerns about potential unregulated activities. The Indian Navy remains vigilant, ensuring that such operations do not infringe upon areas critical to India’s maritime security and economic interests.
Strategic Collaboration Between China and Pakistan
China’s maritime collaboration with Pakistan adds another layer of complexity to the regional security landscape. Since 2009, China has supplied Pakistan with advanced naval platforms, including frigates and submarines. This military cooperation necessitates that India continually assesses and adapts its maritime strategies to counter potential threats arising from this alliance. The Indian Navy is proactively devising measures to mitigate any risks posed by this maritime partnership.
Ensuring India’s Maritime Security
Admiral Tripathi reaffirmed India’s commitment to maintaining control over its maritime domains. The Navy’s proactive stance ensures that external forces do not operate in areas deemed sensitive or critical to national security. Through continuous monitoring and strategic planning, India aims to preserve the stability and security of the Indian Ocean Region, reflecting its resolve to protect its maritime interests against emerging challenges.
