India Monitoring US Tariff Bill on Russian Oil
The Indian government says it is fully aware and closely watching the progress of a US tariff bill that could impose higher duties on Indian goods if India continues buying Russian oil. The Ministry of External Affairs said it is monitoring the situation and remains engaged with US counterparts on the issue.
The proposed US legislation is intended to target countries that increase energy imports from Russia, following Western sanctions on Moscow over its actions in Ukraine. India, one of the largest importers of Russian crude oil, has faced criticism from some US lawmakers for its energy purchases. The MEA said discussions with the United States are ongoing, and India has repeatedly explained its energy needs and market choices.
Government Position on Energy and Trade
Indian officials maintained that India’s energy purchases are based on securing affordable supplies to meet the country’s growing demand. They emphasised that India remains committed to energy security and diversification of sources while engaging in dialogue with partners on trade and tariff issues.
The MEA also noted that India and the US have a broad strategic relationship covering defence, trade, technology and climate cooperation. Officials said both sides are working to address trade frictions through diplomatic channels and avoid punitive measures.
Outlook on the Bill
The tariff proposal is under consideration in the US Congress, and its final form and impact remain uncertain. India said it will continue to engage with the US to protect its economic interests and maintain constructive bilateral ties.
