India Marks 25 Years of Russia Strategic Ties
On October 3, 2025, India commemorated 25 years since the declaration of its strategic partnership with Russia. A Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson welcomed the milestone, calling the relationship “special” and “privileged.”
Official Statements
The MEA highlighted that since 2000, India and Russia have deepened cooperation across trade, defence, science, and technology. Officials noted plans to further strengthen economic, investment, and defence links. The Russian Ambassador to India also praised the anniversary and said the declaration opened a new chapter in bilateral relations.
Context and Significance
The India–Russia strategic partnership began when Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the declaration on October 3, 2000. Over the years, the relationship has been sustained across changing geopolitical landscapes.
Trade between the two countries hit a record USD 68.7 billion in the fiscal year 2024-25. Defence cooperation, nuclear energy, and high-technology projects remain key pillars of the partnership.
Challenges and Future Focus
While ties remain strong, experts note that both sides must adapt to current global pressures — such as sanctions on Russia, supply chain disruptions, and evolving technology norms. India has emphasized that partnerships must evolve and avoid stagnation.
Looking ahead, India and Russia aim to finalize dates for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, possibly in early December 2025.
