India Marks 10 Years of Startup India Programme

India has completed a decade of the Startup India initiative, a flagship programme launched in January 2016 to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the initiative has helped build a strong startup culture and positioned India as a major global startup hub.

Growth of the Startup Ecosystem

Over the last ten years, the programme has supported a rapidly expanding ecosystem by easing regulatory compliance, improving access to funding, and strengthening incubation and mentorship networks. A large number of startups across technology, manufacturing, services, and emerging sectors have been formally recognised under the initiative.

Economic and Employment Impact

Government data shows that startups supported under the programme have contributed significantly to employment generation and innovation-led growth. India is now among the world’s leading countries in terms of the number of startups, with several achieving global scale in areas such as fintech, healthtech, edtech, and clean energy.

Way Forward

The government said its focus will remain on deepening the startup ecosystem, encouraging innovation in new sectors, and improving access to capital and global markets. The next phase aims to make Indian startups more competitive internationally while supporting sustainable and inclusive growth.
