India Likely to Present Union Budget on a Sunday
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to present the Union Budget for the 2026–27 financial year on Sunday, February 1, as the government considers sticking to the established budget calendar despite the date falling on a weekend. Since 2017, the Union Budget has been presented on February 1 to allow sufficient time for parliamentary approval of financial proposals before the new fiscal year begins on April 1.
Cabinet panel to decide on Sunday session
A final decision on holding Parliament proceedings on a Sunday is likely to be taken by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs. If approved, it would require both Houses of Parliament to convene on a non-working day, a move that has precedent but remains relatively uncommon. The government has, in the past, scheduled important legislative business on weekends when required.
Why February 1 remains important
Presenting the budget on February 1 allows ministries and departments to begin implementing policy measures and expenditure plans at the start of the financial year. It also provides markets, states and institutions clarity on taxation, spending priorities and fiscal strategy well in advance.
Preparations already underway
Pre-budget consultations with stakeholders from industry, agriculture, social sectors and economists are already in progress. The Economic Survey, which outlines the state of the economy and policy challenges, is expected to be tabled in Parliament ahead of the budget presentation, as per convention.
If the Sunday schedule is confirmed, it will mark another rare instance of a full Union Budget being presented on a weekend, underscoring the government’s intent to maintain fiscal timelines.
