India Launches New e-Business Visa for Chinese Nationals

India has launched a new e-Business visa category for Chinese nationals to facilitate smoother entry for business-related activities. The visa, officially introduced at the start of January, allows eligible Chinese citizens to apply online for short-term business travel to India without visiting an Indian embassy or consulate.

Purpose of the e-Business Visa

The new visa is aimed at supporting business engagement linked to manufacturing, production, and investment activities. It is intended for Chinese professionals involved in areas such as installation and maintenance of equipment, quality checks, production planning, technical training, IT and ERP system support, supply chain coordination, and senior management visits. Officials said the move is designed to enable project-specific business travel while maintaining regulatory oversight.

Application Process and Conditions

Applicants must complete the entire application digitally. Indian companies sponsoring Chinese business visitors are required to register on the National Single Window System and issue a formal sponsorship letter as part of the process. The visa permits a stay of up to six months, depending on the nature of the business activity approved. Processing timelines are longer than standard e-visas, reflecting additional scrutiny for this category.

Economic and Diplomatic Context

The introduction of the new e-Business visa is seen as part of a cautious step toward improving commercial engagement between India and China. While broader visa restrictions remain in place, the government has chosen to open a limited and controlled channel for business travel tied specifically to investment and production needs.

Expected Impact

Officials expect the visa to support ongoing and upcoming industrial projects involving Chinese companies while ensuring compliance with India’s regulatory and security framework.
