India Launches ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra’ for Security

On India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Mission Sudarshan Chakra, an ambitious national defence initiative aimed at developing an advanced, multi-layered air defence system using exclusively Indian technology.

A Mythical Inspiration for Modern Defence

Named after Lord Krishna’s divine weapon, the mission draws inspiration from mythology to create a formidable shield for India. Designed to protect critical civil and strategic infrastructure, the system is being compared to Israel’s Iron Dome and is expected to evolve into a nationwide security network by 2035.

Self-Reliance in Defence

Modi emphasized that the entire system will be researched, developed, and manufactured within India, underscoring a commitment to self-reliance in national security. He urged India’s scientific and engineering communities to contribute to this homegrown defence capability alongside efforts to build indigenous jet engines.

Broader Independence Day Agenda

The announcement was one of several during Modi’s address from the Red Fort. The Prime Minister also launched GST reforms aimed for rollout by Diwali, a ₹1 lakh crore job scheme focused on empowering youth, and a high-powered demographic mission to safeguard national integrity—extending his vision toward “Viksit Bharat 2047.”
