India Launches ₹400 Cr Creative Tech Institute in Mumbai

In a landmark initiative to boost India’s creative economy, the central government has announced the establishment of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai, backed by a substantial ₹400 crore investment. Envisioned as a National Centre of Excellence, the institute is designed to focus exclusively on the AVGC-XR sector—covering Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality.

Modelled on the lines of the IITs and IIMs, IICT was formally announced at the WAVES 2025 summit held at the Jio World Centre. The institute is set to replicate the success of India’s IT revolution in the digital creative domain, aiming to build a robust talent pipeline and innovation ecosystem in media and entertainment.

The Government of Maharashtra has allotted ten acres of land in Mumbai Film City for the institute’s permanent campus. Until construction is completed, the institute will begin operations from a state-run facility in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).

In a major boost to its global aspirations, leading tech companies including NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Adobe, and Star India have pledged collaborative support. These partnerships will help the institute offer cutting-edge research, skill development, and innovation capabilities in creative technologies.

The institute will feature high-end infrastructure including virtual production suites, immersive studios, animation labs, gaming facilities, and smart classrooms. In its second phase, IICT will expand to a dedicated 10-acre campus in Goregaon, with plans for regional centres across the country to decentralize access and nurture regional creative hubs.

Apart from offering academic training, IICT will serve as a hub for innovation, incubation, policy-making, and content development. It aims to empower a new generation of professionals, creators, and entrepreneurs to make India a global leader in the creative technology domain.

The leadership team comprises Dr. Vishwas Deoskar as CEO, Ninad Raikar as COO, and Shweta Verma leading marketing initiatives. Their combined experience is expected to steer IICT into becoming a transformative institution for the AVGC-XR industry in India and beyond.
