The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the launch of two comprehensive umbrella schemes for the agriculture sector, allocating a massive ₹1,01,321 crore.
This initiative, announced on Thursday, aims to transform India’s agricultural landscape by promoting sustainable practices, enhancing farmers’ incomes, and improving food security.
Consolidation of Agricultural Schemes
The two new schemes—Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) and Krishonnati Yojana (KY)—are set to streamline all existing Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers. The consolidation aims to avoid duplication, ensure convergence, and provide state governments with greater flexibility in addressing regional agricultural challenges.
Focus Areas and Objectives
The primary goals of PM-RKVY and Krishonnati Yojana are to support sustainable agricultural practices, achieve self-sufficiency in food production, and tackle emerging challenges in the agricultural sector. The schemes will focus on:
- Nutrition Security: Ensuring adequate and diverse food supply to meet nutritional needs.
- Sustainability: Promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.
- Climate Resilience: Building the capacity of farmers to adapt to climate change and mitigate its impact.
- Value Chain Development: Strengthening the agricultural value chain, from production to market.
- Private Sector Engagement: Encouraging private investment and participation in agriculture.
Implementation Through State Governments
Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted that the schemes will leverage technology to ensure efficient implementation and will be executed through state governments. “These schemes offer the flexibility for states to develop a comprehensive strategic plan tailored to their specific agricultural needs,” said Vaishnaw.
The consolidated approach will simplify the planning process for state governments, allowing them to create an Annual Action Plan (AAP) in one go, instead of submitting individual scheme-wise AAPs. This streamlined process is expected to accelerate project approvals and improve overall efficiency in scheme implementation.
A Strategic Move for Agricultural Growth
The new schemes aim to empower state governments to address diverse agricultural challenges more effectively. By offering a consolidated framework, the government seeks to enhance coordination between various stakeholders and enable the sector to respond more dynamically to emerging needs, such as climate resilience and private sector participation.
With a significant investment of ₹1.01 lakh crore, the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and Krishonnati Yojana are set to pave the way for a more robust and resilient agricultural sector, ultimately benefiting millions of farmers across India and securing the nation’s food security. This move is expected to transform India’s agricultural landscape and reinforce its position as a key global player in sustainable farming and food production.
