India Jumps to 77th in Passport Index Rankings
India has recorded its biggest rise yet in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, climbing eight positions to rank 77th globally. The improvement reflects better international access for Indian passport holders and marks a notable shift in the country’s travel freedom.
Visa-Free Access to 59 Countries
Indian citizens now have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 countries, an increase from previous years. Key destinations include Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Maldives. Other countries such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Macau offer visa-on-arrival, expanding the options for Indian travelers.
How the Index Works
The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations accessible without a prior visa. India’s improvement is tied to recent diplomatic efforts and mutual travel agreements with several countries. However, India’s passport still lags behind those of Singapore, which ranks first with access to 193 destinations, and other top-performing nations like Japan, South Korea, Germany, and Spain.
Global Trends and Comparisons
While India has made gains, some traditional powerhouses have seen declines. The U.S. and U.K. now offer access to 182 and 186 countries, respectively, both falling behind in the latest rankings. This shift reflects global changes in visa policies and bilateral ties.
What It Means for Travelers
Indian travelers now benefit from simplified travel to more destinations, reducing visa hassles and costs. This opens up greater opportunities for tourism, business, education, and professional engagement abroad. The expanded mobility also signals India’s growing presence on the world stage.
