India Joins Zapad-2025 Military Drills Amid US Trade Strain

India has deployed 65 military personnel, including a battalion from the Kumaon Regiment, to participate in the Zapad-2025 joint exercises organised by Russia and Belarus. The drills ran from 12 to 16 September.

Nature and Location of the Drills

The drills involved tactical training, company-level cooperation, and special arms exercises. Indian forces took part along with Russian and Belarusian troops. The exercises were staged in Belarus, including at Mulino in Nizhny Novgorod.

Context: Trade Tensions with the US

India’s participation comes at a sensitive time, as its trade relations with the United States are under strain. Last month, the US imposed a 50% tariff on certain Indian goods, citing concerns about India’s continuing oil imports from Russia.

India’s Position and Rationale

The Ministry of Defence described India’s role in the drills as a way to “further strengthen defence cooperation” and foster mutual trust with Russia. The government says the drills are not targeted against any country.

International Reactions

Observers note India’s decision as significant, given its growing strategic ties with Western countries. The move has raised questions about how India balances its defence cooperation with Russia with its trade and diplomatic ties with the US.
