India–Japan Adopt Joint Declaration on Defence

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tokyo on August 29, 2025, India and Japan adopted a new Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation, updating their 2008 framework and marking a significant step forward in their strategic partnership.

Defence and Security Cooperation

The declaration commits both nations to enhance interoperability and strategic coordination between their defense forces. This includes conducting bilateral and multilateral military exercises and establishing a new forum for comprehensive joint-staff dialogue to boost readiness and defense capabilities.

Broader Strategic Collaboration

Beyond defence, India and Japan unveiled a Joint Vision for the Next Decade, outlining cooperation across security, clean energy, technology, space, and innovation. They reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, aligning with the Quad framework that also includes the U.S. and Australia.

Economic and Workforce Tie-ups

The two countries agreed on raising Japanese private-sector investment in India to around ¥10 trillion (USD ~$68 billion) over the next decade. They also launched an Economic Security Initiative targeting supply chain resilience and highlighted enhanced mobility of workers and students to complement sectors such as robotics, green energy, and semiconductors.
