India-Italy Launch Joint Initiative Against Terror Financing
India and Italy announced a new joint initiative to combat the financing of terrorism during a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. Both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation against illicit financial networks that support extremist groups.
Focus Areas Of The Initiative
The initiative aims to enhance intelligence sharing, tighten regulatory coordination and work more closely within global bodies such as the FATF and the Global Counter Terrorism Forum. Italy also expressed strong solidarity with India over recent security concerns and pledged deeper collaboration in counter-terror operations and financial monitoring.
Broader India–Italy Bilateral Agenda
The two leaders also reviewed the progress of their strategic partnership, covering defence cooperation, technology, space, clean energy, and education. Both sides highlighted steady growth in trade, which is currently around USD 15 billion, and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding investment ties and supply-chain resilience.
Importance Of The Agreement
The announcement marks a significant step forward in India’s efforts to build international coalitions against terrorism financing. Implementation will now move to technical teams, who will outline operational frameworks, coordination mechanisms and timelines for joint action.
