India hosted the first BRICS Sherpa meeting under its 2026 chairmanship, bringing together representatives from member countries to outline priorities and coordination plans for the year ahead.

Officials from BRICS nations met to discuss agenda setting, cooperation mechanisms and scheduling of ministerial and leaders’ level engagements. The discussions focused on shaping the calendar of meetings and identifying areas of collective action.
India emphasised strengthening institutional coordination within the grouping and ensuring continuity of initiatives launched in previous summits.
BRICS Cooperation Priorities Under India
The Indian side highlighted key themes including economic cooperation, financial stability, sustainable development and reform of multilateral institutions. Delegates also discussed expanding collaboration across technology, trade facilitation and development financing.
The meeting marked the formal start of preparations for the annual BRICS summit to be held later in the year under India’s leadership.
Global South And Multilateral Reform Agenda
India reiterated its focus on amplifying the voice of the Global South and promoting inclusive growth frameworks. Participants exchanged views on improving representation of emerging economies in global governance institutions and strengthening South-South cooperation.
Further consultations and working group meetings are expected to continue in the coming months as part of the chairmanship programme.
