India, Germany Stress Predictability Amid Volatility
In a clear message to Washington, India and Germany paired up to underscore the importance of predictability and reliability in global politics. The comments followed a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in New Delhi.
Predictability Gains Value
Jaishankar said that “predictability today has a huge premium in global politics,” noting India’s strength lies in delivering consistent policies and promises. He positioned Germany as a dependable partner amid global economic and political turbulence.
German Support Echoes the Theme
Wadephul, on a two-day visit to India, echoed the sentiment, stressing that “reliability,” “friendship,” and “predictability” are “invaluable” during uncertain times. He refrained from criticizing the U.S. directly, though the message was seen as a subtle reference to its recent inconsistent policies.
Strategic Cooperation Ahead
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in meeting Wadephul separately, reaffirmed the 25-year strategic partnership between the two countries. He invited the German Chancellor for an early visit. Both leaders highlighted opportunities in trade, technology, sustainability, manufacturing, and mobility, and stressed their shared vision for a multipolar world, peace, and United Nations reform.
Trade Ambitions and Security Alignment
India–Germany trade reached nearly €50 billion last year. Jaishankar expressed eagerness to support German companies operating in India and pledged special attention to ease business concerns. He also appreciated Germany’s understanding of India’s counterterrorism efforts.
