India Fast-Tracks 87 Indigenous MALE Drone Purchase

India has fast-tracked the procurement of 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones to enhance surveillance along its borders and maritime areas. The proposal, valued at over ₹20,000 crore, is expected to be reviewed soon by the Defence Ministry and forms part of India’s push to improve air monitoring capabilities.

Home-Grown Design Under “Make in India”

A key requirement of the project is that at least 60% of the drone components come from Indian manufacturers. This marks a shift away from reliance on foreign imports and aligns with the government’s Self-Reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) policy in defence. Leading Indian firms expected to participate include Adani Defence, HAL, Tata Advanced Systems, L&T, Solar Defence & Aerospace, IdeaForge, and NewSpace Research.

Advanced Features and Military Use

The MALE drones will operate at altitudes up to 35,000 ft and can stay airborne for over 30 hours. They will be equipped with electro-optical/infrared cameras, radar systems, secure communication links, and integrated missile payloads. These capabilities will allow persistent intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and limited combat support, particularly in difficult terrains.

Boost to Indian Defence Ecosystem

Experts say this deal will boost India’s indigenous defence tech industry. Private and public sector players are expected to benefit, as this is the first major MALE drone project led by Indian manufacturers. It will also help build a domestic supply chain and create skilled jobs in aerospace and defence manufacturing.

Operational Timeline

The deal is expected to be approved in late 2025, with prototypes tested next year. Initial deliveries may begin in 2027, and full operational induction is anticipated by 2029. Once deployed, these drones will support the Army, Air Force, and Navy in monitoring land borders, the Line of Actual Control, the Line of Control, and maritime zones.

Strategic Impact

Procurement of these drones comes at a time when India is emphasising tech-enabled defence, highlighted recently by Operation Sindoor. The MALE UAVs are expected to provide round-the-clock surveillance, help deter hostile actions, and support disaster management.
