India Examines Bangladesh’s Request To Extradite Sheikh Hasina

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that India has received a formal request from Bangladesh seeking the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina has been in India since fleeing Dhaka after political unrest and her subsequent conviction by a Bangladeshi tribunal.

Government Begins Legal Examination

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the request is now under detailed legal review as part of India’s internal procedures. He noted that the government will study all relevant documents and maintain communication with Bangladesh before taking any decision.

Treaty Conditions And Possible Roadblocks

India and Bangladesh have a bilateral extradition treaty, but any transfer must satisfy Indian legal standards. Extradition can be denied if the charges are considered “political offences” or if there are concerns regarding due process in the convicting jurisdiction. Officials familiar with such cases say these evaluations often take considerable time due to the legal complexity involved.

Diplomatic Sensitivity And Regional Impact

The matter carries significant diplomatic weight, with potential implications for New Delhi–Dhaka relations. Analysts say India must weigh legal obligations, humanitarian factors and strategic considerations, especially given the current political climate in Bangladesh. No decision has yet been made on whether Hasina will be extradited.
