India Elected to UN ECOSOC for 2026–28 Term
India has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2026. This development reaffirms India’s active role in shaping global development priorities and its consistent engagement with key international institutions.
ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the United Nations and serves as the central platform for discussing international economic, social, and environmental issues. It plays a key role in driving the global sustainable development agenda by coordinating policy guidance, reviewing progress, and recommending actions across member states.
India’s election to ECOSOC is widely seen as recognition of its leadership on issues such as inclusive economic growth, social justice, digital governance, climate action, and poverty alleviation. With growing influence in the Global South and active participation in global climate and development forums, India is expected to bring a strong voice to the Council during its upcoming term.
India has consistently pushed for reform of multilateral institutions to make them more representative and equitable. Its new position on ECOSOC will provide an important platform to advance these principles while also contributing constructively to global development goals.
As a member, India will be involved in steering ECOSOC’s work in areas such as financing for development, access to health and education, gender equality, and sustainability-focused innovation. The term will run until December 31, 2028.
The election comes at a time when the world faces overlapping challenges—from climate emergencies to food security, digital divides, and global inequality. India’s experience and policy interventions in areas like renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, and social welfare schemes are expected to add value to ECOSOC’s deliberations.
