India Drops Two Spots in Climate Index, Stays in Top 10
India continues to feature among the world’s top climate performers, ranking 10th in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025, despite a two-spot drop from last year.
The index, which evaluates 63 countries and the European Union, highlights India’s progress in combating climate change, emphasizing its low per-capita emissions and rapid adoption of renewable energy.
Key Findings from CCPI 2025
The CCPI 2025, released by Germanwatch, New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International, assesses nations based on emissions, renewable energy, and climate policy. Together, the 63 countries and the EU account for 90% of global emissions.
While India maintained its position among the highest performers globally, the report noted that “significant changes in India’s climate policy are unlikely.” It attributed this to India’s growth-driven climate action strategy, which is expected to continue amid rising energy demand from industrial and population growth.
No Country Achieves “Very High” Rating
The first three spots on the index remain unoccupied, as no country demonstrated exemplary performance across all categories to warrant a “very high” rating.
India’s Continued Climate Efforts
India’s ranking underscores its commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources. However, the report signals the need for stronger policy measures to sustain its position in the fight against climate change. As global climate challenges intensify, India’s role as a key player in the international climate landscape remains crucial.
