India “Diversifying” from Russian Oil? U.S. Aide Says So

A U.S. trade official associated with President Trump claimed India has begun reducing its reliance on Russian oil, describing the shift as “pragmatic.” The comment comes amid rising tariff tensions and scrutiny of India’s energy purchases.

U.S. Official’s Statement

At the Economic Club of New York, Jamieson Greer, a U.S. trade representative, said India is making independent decisions and is already diversifying its oil sources. He emphasised that Washington is not dictating India’s choices.

India’s Position

However, India has not officially confirmed any formal policy change. Indian authorities continue to assert that their energy strategy is driven by supply, cost, and strategic autonomy. India has maintained large Russian oil imports over recent years—at times accounting for over one-third of its total crude purchases.

Ongoing Trade Tensions

Other U.S. officials have also criticized India’s oil trade with Russia. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused India of profiting from discounted Russian crude and reselling refined products. In response, India defended its approach, stating that purchasing Russian oil is lawful and part of its effort to meet demand affordably.

Growing Diplomatic Strain

The contrasting claims highlight a growing diplomatic strain between India and the U.S. over trade practices and energy security.
