India Denies U.S. Used Its Airspace for Strikes on Iran

India has categorically denied claims that it allowed the United States to use its airspace to carry out military strikes on Iranian targets, amid a growing military escalation in West Asia. The official denial was issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which asserted that no such permission was granted and any reports suggesting otherwise are completely baseless and misleading.

Airspace Access Firmly Rejected

Over the past several days, speculation had mounted in both traditional and social media circles that U.S. bombers or fighter jets may have crossed Indian airspace en route to striking sites in Iran, particularly in the wake of attacks on nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. However, Indian officials made it clear that no American military aircraft were authorized to traverse Indian airspace for this purpose.

The MEA stated, “India has not allowed any U.S. military aircraft or support planes involved in the Iran operations to fly through Indian skies.” Officials emphasized that such overflights require explicit government approval, which was neither sought nor granted.

Neutrality and Sovereignty Reaffirmed

India reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to strategic autonomy and non-alignment, especially in conflicts involving foreign powers. By rejecting these airspace claims, New Delhi underlined its determination to remain a neutral actor in the region and protect its sovereign decision-making against geopolitical pressures. The government reiterated that it has consistently advocated for de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomatic engagement over the use of force.

Message to Domestic and Global Audiences

India’s clarification serves a dual purpose. Domestically, it seeks to calm concerns over India being inadvertently drawn into a high-stakes military conflict. Internationally, the statement distances New Delhi from any notion of complicity in Western military operations targeting Iran. It also helps maintain India’s delicate diplomatic ties with both the United States and Iran, two nations with which India shares significant strategic and economic interests.
