India Defies U.S. Pressure, Buys Oil on Best Terms

India has strongly rejected U.S. tariffs linked to its Russian oil imports. Indian ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, called the measures “unfair, unreasonable and unjustified,” stressing that New Delhi will protect its sovereign right to decide energy strategy.

Kumar clarified that Indian firms will continue buying oil “from wherever they get the best deal.” He underlined that energy security for India’s 1.4 billion citizens cannot be compromised and that decisions are based purely on commercial terms.

U.S. Raises Duties to 50%

President Donald Trump’s administration recently imposed an extra 25% duty on Indian goods, in addition to an existing 25%, raising total U.S. tariffs on India to about 50%. The move directly targeted India’s continued imports of discounted Russian crude.

India’s Broader Stand

Despite rising trade tensions, Indian officials highlighted that bilateral relations with the U.S. extend beyond tariffs. Defense and strategic cooperation remain on track, with New Delhi insisting ties must be based on equality and mutual respect.
