India Curtailed 8,133 GWh Solar Power

India curtailed 8,133 gigawatt-hours of solar electricity during the April-June 2026 quarter as transmission bottlenecks and grid-security requirements limited the system’s ability to absorb growing renewable power generation.

Solar Power Curtailment Reaches 8,133 GWh

Solar power restrictions totalled 2,417 GWh in April before rising to 3,235 GWh in May. Curtailment eased to 2,481 GWh in June but remained substantial as grid operators balanced electricity supply with available transmission capacity.

The government said the restrictions were necessary to ensure the reliable and secure operation of the national grid. Curtailment occurs when renewable power plants are directed to reduce generation despite having the capacity and weather conditions required to produce electricity.

Transmission Delays Restrict Renewable Energy

The government attributed the problem partly to a mismatch between the commissioning of renewable energy projects and the completion of supporting transmission infrastructure.

Several clean-energy plants have entered operation before associated power lines and grid-strengthening projects were completed. This has left some regions producing more solar electricity than the existing network can safely transmit to consumers.

Transmission constraints can reduce revenue for project developers, weaken the efficiency of renewable-energy investments and delay the replacement of conventional power sources.

India Targets 500 GW Clean Energy Capacity

The curtailment challenge comes as India rapidly expands its renewable-energy network. The country has approximately 288 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity and aims to reach 500 GW by 2030.

Meeting the target will require faster development of interstate transmission lines, battery-storage systems and technologies capable of balancing fluctuating solar and wind generation.

The government said restrictions would continue whenever necessary to protect grid stability and prevent disruptions to electricity supply.
