India Constructs World’s Longest LPG Pipeline to Enhance Safety and Efficiency
India is on the verge of commissioning the world’s longest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) pipeline, a strategic move aimed at reducing transportation costs and minimizing road-related hazards associated with fuel transport. This $1.3 billion infrastructure project spans approximately 2,800 kilometers, connecting Kandla in Gujarat to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.
Project Overview
The pipeline, developed by a consortium of state-run oil companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—is designed to transport about 8.3 million tons of LPG annually. This capacity accounts for roughly 25% of India’s total LPG demand, significantly enhancing the nation’s energy distribution network.
Enhancing Safety and Reducing Costs
Traditionally, LPG has been transported across India via road tankers, a method fraught with risks and higher costs. The new pipeline is expected to replace hundreds of these trucks, thereby reducing the likelihood of accidents and associated fatalities. Recent incidents, such as a tanker overturning in Coimbatore and a tragic accident in Jaipur resulting in multiple casualties, underscore the pressing need for safer transportation alternatives.
N. Senthil Kumar, Director of Pipelines at Indian Oil Corporation, emphasized the transformative impact of the project, stating, “This will be a game changer in the LPG supply chain.” By providing a continuous and secure mode of fuel transport, the pipeline is poised to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
Operational Timeline
The project is slated for full operational status by June 2025. The first phase is expected to be commissioned in March, with the entire pipeline becoming fully functional by mid-year. This timeline reflects the commitment of the involved companies to expedite infrastructure development in response to the country’s growing energy needs.
Strategic Significance
Beyond safety and cost considerations, the pipeline is strategically significant for India’s energy sector. It will facilitate a more reliable supply of LPG to bottling plants and distribution centers across several states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. This enhanced distribution network is anticipated to meet increasing consumer demand and support the government’s initiatives toward cleaner cooking fuels.
