India Confirms Natural Gas in Andaman Sea

India’s state-run explorer Oil India Ltd has officially confirmed the presence of natural gas in the Andaman Sea basin, in the Sri Vijayapuram-II well. This marks the first confirmed hydrocarbon occurrence in that offshore region.

Well Details & Gas Quality

The well is located about 17 km from the east coast of the Andaman Islands, in water about 295 metres deep, with a total drilling target of 2,650 metres. Initial sampling between 2,212 and 2,250 metres detected gas and intermittent flaring. Gas samples sent to a laboratory in Kakinada showed 87% methane content.

Commercial Viability Pending

While the find confirms that hydrocarbons exist in the basin, experts caution that commercial viability—the size, pressure, and recoverability—still needs detailed evaluation. Only then can it be declared a full discovery.

Significance for India’s Energy Ambitions

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri described the development as opening up an “ocean of energy opportunities.” The discovery aligns with the government’s Deep Water Exploration Mission, aiming to reduce energy import dependence and bolster domestic supply.

Challenges & Next Steps

India must now engage in further exploration, reservoir studies, and investment planning. Offshore infrastructure, logistics, and environmental safeguards will be crucial. Analysts also note that success in Andaman may spark further exploration along the east coast and in deeper offshore zones.
