India, China to Resume Direct Flights by Late October

The Government of India has announced that direct passenger flights between India and China will resume by late October 2025, after more than five years of suspension. The suspension began in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating tensions along the India-China border.

According to the announcement, airlines will restart services on designated routes subject to regulatory approvals and commercial feasibility. IndiGo has confirmed it will launch a Kolkata–Guangzhou route beginning October 26, 2025, pending clearances. Plans are underway to add further direct links in due course.

Officials say the decision is part of a gradual diplomatic reset aimed at restoring “people-to-people contact” and improving bilateral engagement. The resumption follows recent high-level meetings and renewed efforts by both nations to normalise relations. Earlier this year, India and China had agreed to expedite the restoration of air services.

Civil aviation authorities are now conducting technical talks to finalise flight schedules, air service agreements, and safety protocols. Stakeholders expect the restored connectivity to help trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
