India, Canada Hold Talks on Bilateral Ties
India and Canada held talks on bilateral relations on Republic Day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said. The discussions were aimed at reviewing ties and exploring ways to strengthen engagement between the two countries after a period of strained relations.
Areas of Cooperation
According to Jaishankar, the talks focused on improving cooperation across key areas including trade, investment, technology, education, and people-to-people links. Both sides underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and diplomatic engagement to address concerns and rebuild trust.
Context of Relations
India-Canada relations have seen tensions in recent years, leading to a slowdown in high-level engagement. However, both governments have signalled interest in stabilising ties and restoring regular diplomatic communication. The Republic Day interaction is being seen as part of broader efforts to normalise relations and identify common ground for future cooperation.
Officials said further engagement at multiple levels is expected in the coming months as both sides work towards improving the overall relationship.
