India, Canada Agree to Reset Ties and Strengthen Security
India and Canada have agreed to work together to open a new chapter in their bilateral relationship. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met his Canadian counterpart Nathalie G. Drouin in New Delhi, where both sides committed to cooperation after recent strains in ties.
Areas of Cooperation
The two countries outlined plans to co-operate more closely in combating terrorism, transnational organised crime, and intelligence sharing. They also discussed reinforcing existing security mechanisms and starting priority policy dialogues.
Background and Trust Revival
The efforts to reset relations follow a diplomatic strain that intensified after the 2023 killing of a Sikh separatist in Canada. The talks are seen as follow-ups to earlier understandings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian PM Mark Carney during the G7 summit.
Next Steps
India and Canada plan to reactivate high level dialogues in security and foreign offices, and work on restoring trust. They have agreed to keep diplomatic engagement steady and continue exploring cooperation in trade, defence, and related sectors.
