India Boosts Defence Budget to ₹7.85 Lakh Crore
The Union Budget 2026–27 presented by the government has **increased India’s defence allocation to a record ₹7.85 lakh crore, marking a 15 % rise over last year’s budget as part of efforts to strengthen the armed forces after recent security challenges. A significant share of the funds is directed at modernising the military’s capabilities.
Modernisation Outlay Increased
Out of the total defence budget, ₹2.19 lakh crore has been allocated under the capital head for modernisation, up nearly 22 % compared with the previous year’s capital budget. This includes enhanced funding for acquisition of advanced aircraft, aero engines, naval assets, and other systems to upgrade India’s military platforms and technology.
Strategic Focus and Aatmanirbhar Push
Defence officials said the higher capital outlay reflects a strategic focus on self-reliance in defence production, with a large portion of modernisation funds earmarked for domestic procurement. The budget also supports operational readiness, personnel welfare, and infrastructure needs. The rise in defence spending underscores the government’s commitment to national security and preparedness amid evolving regional challenges.
