Officials said the approval aims to strengthen India’s layered air defence network by replenishing and expanding interceptor stockpiles. The S-400 system is designed to engage aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missile threats at long ranges and high altitudes.

The missiles are part of previously contracted air defence systems already deployed at strategic locations across the country.

Operation Sindoor Air Defence Lessons

The decision follows operational assessments conducted after Operation Sindoor, where the air defence system was deployed in an active security scenario. Defence planners reviewed performance data and recommended expanding missile inventory to ensure sustained readiness.

The procurement is expected to improve response capacity against multiple aerial threats and enhance deterrence capability.

India Russia Defence Cooperation

The purchase continues defence cooperation between India and Russia under existing agreements. Authorities indicated the acquisition aligns with long term plans to maintain operational availability of advanced air defence platforms.

Delivery schedules and integration processes will be coordinated with the armed forces to maintain uninterrupted operational coverage.
