India Announces Rs 4,000 Crore Aid for Sri Lanka Rebuild
India on Tuesday announced a Rs 4,000 crore reconstruction and assistance package to support Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts following widespread damage caused by a recent cyclone. The announcement underlined New Delhi’s continued commitment to assisting its neighbour during natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
Details of the assistance package
The financial package will be used to support reconstruction of critical infrastructure and restoration of livelihoods in cyclone-affected regions of Sri Lanka. Officials said the assistance will include a mix of grants and concessional funding aimed at rebuilding damaged homes, repairing roads and public utilities, and supporting essential services disrupted by the disaster. The aid is expected to be implemented in coordination with Sri Lankan authorities to ensure priority areas receive timely support.
Impact of the cyclone
The cyclone caused extensive damage across several parts of Sri Lanka, triggering floods, landslides and large-scale displacement. Thousands of families were affected, with homes, agricultural land and local infrastructure bearing the brunt of the impact. Sri Lankan authorities have said the scale of damage has placed significant strain on public resources and recovery capacities.
India’s role in disaster support
India has been among the first responders to Sri Lanka during recent emergencies, providing relief material, logistical support and financial assistance. The latest reconstruction package builds on earlier humanitarian aid sent in the immediate aftermath of the cyclone, including essential supplies and emergency support.
Bilateral cooperation
Officials from both countries said the reconstruction package reflects strong bilateral ties and regional cooperation. Detailed implementation plans, including sector-wise allocation and timelines, are expected to be finalised through joint consultations in the coming weeks.
