India And Russia Expand Arctic And Nuclear Cooperation

India and Russia have agreed to deepen cooperation in the Arctic region and in civil nuclear energy as part of their latest annual summit. Both governments said the partnership will support long-term connectivity, energy security and strategic trade.

Arctic Shipping And Maritime Links

The agreement includes greater collaboration on Arctic shipping routes, polar water logistics and the Chennai–Vladivostok maritime corridor. Using the Northern Sea Route is expected to shorten transport distances and improve access to resources in the Russian Far East. Both sides will explore investment in port facilities, shipping infrastructure and cargo services along these routes.

Nuclear Energy Projects

The two countries also reaffirmed cooperation on nuclear power. Existing work at the Kudankulam nuclear plant will continue, and discussions are underway on a possible second site for Russian-designed reactors in India. The collaboration includes fuel supply, maintenance and long-term service arrangements, supporting India’s plans to expand clean energy capacity.

Strategic Partnership

The decisions form part of a broader programme that extends to 2030. Leaders said the cooperation enhances economic ties, connectivity and technological partnership. For India, access to Arctic shipping and reliable nuclear power support national energy objectives, while Russia gains a committed partner in long-term trade and investment.
