India And Canada Restart CEPA Trade Talks

India and Canada have decided to restart negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) after a two-year pause. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, where both sides agreed to pursue what they described as a “high-ambition” trade pact.

Focus On Expanding Trade And Cooperation

The renewed talks aim to significantly expand bilateral trade, with both countries targeting levels of around USD 50 billion by 2030. Discussions also included strengthening civil nuclear cooperation, with Canada signalling readiness for long-term uranium supply agreements. Other areas of engagement include technology, energy, space and defence.

Attempt To Reset Strained Diplomatic Ties

The revival of CEPA talks marks a broader diplomatic reset following tensions that emerged in 2023 over allegations made by Canada, which India strongly rejected. Both nations now appear focused on rebuilding ties through economic cooperation and structured dialogue.

Next Steps In The Trade Process

Technical teams from both sides will begin formal discussions on the trade agreement’s framework, covering tariff schedules, service-sector access and dispute-resolution mechanisms. The pace and outcome of talks will depend on how effectively both countries address remaining sensitivities.
