India Among 7 Nations to Add 500 Million Urban Residents

A new UN DESA “World Urbanisation Prospects 2025” report projects that India, along with six other countries, will account for more than 500 million additional city residents between 2025 and 2050. The countries listed are India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Bangladesh and Ethiopia. Together, they are expected to drive over half of the world’s total urban population growth during this period.

Scale of the Population Increase

These seven nations currently make up around 30 percent of the global population. By 2050, their combined urban growth is projected to exceed 500 million, out of an estimated global urban expansion of nearly 986 million people. India alone will contribute a substantial share, reflecting its rapid transition toward urban living.

Impact on India’s Urban Future

The report warns that India’s expanding city population will place immense pressure on infrastructure, housing, transport, water supply and environmental systems. Experts say India must scale up urban planning, expand smart-city initiatives and focus on equitable access to essential services. The UN notes that India’s ability to manage this urban surge will significantly influence global sustainable development outcomes.
