Imran Khan Told to Leave India After CJP Protest
Bollywood actor Imran Khan has reportedly been directed to leave India by October 28, 2026, following allegations that he violated immigration regulations by participating in a political demonstration in Mumbai. The 43-year-old American citizen attended an October 10 protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Election Commission’s electoral roll revision exercise.
Imran Khan Receives Notice to Leave India
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) reportedly issued the notice following a complaint filed with Mumbai Police alleging that Khan had violated conditions governing the activities of foreign nationals in India.
Khan, the nephew of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, participated in a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
The actor was detained during the protest and subsequently shared an Instagram photograph showing himself inside what appeared to be a police vehicle.
US Citizenship Raises Immigration Law Questions
Khan is an American citizen and reportedly holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, which permits eligible foreign nationals to reside and work in India subject to applicable conditions.
However, OCI status does not confer Indian citizenship or automatically provide the political rights reserved for Indian citizens.
Authorities have alleged that Khan’s participation in the demonstration breached immigration regulations. The precise legal basis for the departure notice has not been publicly detailed.
CJP Protest Against Chief Election Commissioner
The October 10 demonstration demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid opposition allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Opposition parties have questioned the revision process, alleging that voter-list changes could favour the ruling BJP. These allegations remain disputed.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has appealed to members of the film industry to support Khan following the notice.
The actor has reportedly considered challenging the directive through legal proceedings.
