IMF Says AI ‘Tsunami’ Will Hit Global Jobs
International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to significantly disrupt the global labour market, comparing its impact to a “tsunami” at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She said AI could affect around 40 % of jobs worldwide, reshaping roles or leading to elimination and transformation of work as technologies advance.
Young And Entry-Level Roles At Risk
Georgieva highlighted that young people and entry-level workers may face the greatest challenges, as many early-career and routine jobs are more vulnerable to automation and AI-driven change. While some jobs may be enhanced by AI, many traditional roles could diminish without adequate skills and training support.
Need For Skills And Policy Response
The IMF chief urged governments, businesses and educators to prioritise skills development, lifelong learning and inclusive policy frameworks to help workers adapt to rapid technological change. She stressed that preparing communities and investing in education and digital infrastructure would be critical to mitigate disruptions and ensure broad participation in future economic opportunities.
