IMD Warns of Returning Heatwaves in North and Central India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning for heatwave conditions expected to return across parts of north and central India in the coming days. After a brief period of cooler temperatures due to scattered rains, the mercury is now forecasted to climb again, potentially leading to hazardous conditions in multiple states.

According to the IMD, a gradual increase in temperature by 2–3°C is expected over northwest India in the next five days. The situation is being closely monitored as multiple states prepare for another round of extreme weather.

Regions Under Alert

  • South Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience heatwave conditions from April 22 to 24.

  • Rajasthan and Haryana could face similar heatwave impacts between April 23 and 24.

  • Vidarbha region of Maharashtra is expected to be affected from April 21 to 23.

The IMD has issued ‘yellow’ alerts across these areas, urging citizens and local authorities to prepare and take necessary precautions, especially to protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

Warming Trend After Brief Relief

The recent rainfall between April 9 and 12 brought temporary relief, especially in western India where temperatures had previously soared past 46°C. However, temperatures are now trending upward again. On April 20, Chandrapur in Maharashtra registered a high of 44.6°C, highlighting the rapid return of oppressive heat.

Extended Forecast and Summer Outlook

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts above-normal maximum temperatures for much of India between April and June. States including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha are likely to experience a higher number of heatwave days compared to the seasonal average.

Public Health Advisory

Residents in affected regions are strongly advised to:

  • Stay hydrated and avoid going outdoors during peak heat hours (12 PM to 4 PM).

  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.

  • Check on elderly family members and infants frequently.

  • Keep updated with local weather alerts and heed official advisories.

With summer intensifying across India, the IMD’s alerts serve as a critical reminder to remain vigilant and adopt heat safety measures to minimize health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
